For those who don't know, the photo above is from a Japanese drama, Hana Yori Dango AKA Boys Before Flowers, Boys Over Flowers.
It's one of my favorite Japanese drama's and in my opinion, one of the best out there. It's about a girl, Makino who is the only poor student at a rich and prestige school that's ruled by four rich guys who call themselves, F4. One day she stands up to the leader of F4, Doumyouji because he was mean to her friend. And the drama begins...
If you are interested in watching Japanese dramas, definitely check this one out.
Now, I got the idea of making something special for my boyfriend for our monthiversary from this drama - cookies! Around that time, last year, I searched online trying to find some kind of recipe for it and luckily I came across one. Here is their website where I found the recipe: http://do-s.vox.com/library/post/doumyouji-cookie-recipe.html A big thanks to Iroiro for the recipe :].
Here is how it turned out.

I had fun making the cookies and I knew my boyfriend would like them (he also watched the drama :]).
I also made ones of my brother, mom and myself.

You don't have to be a pro to bake, but if you follow her directions properly, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results. The only thing I did differently was that I used an oval cookie cutter from Michaels and I bent it a little to form somewhat of a circle.
I think next time, instead of making the face with shortbread batter, I'll just make the faces out of sugar cookies instead so the faces won't fall apart easily. I didn't like the taste of shortbread either, so this is your choice.
After baking these cookies, I started to do more creative things with food. It was very inspirational.
Happy baking! :3

So its come to my attention that the link to the Doumyouji cookie recipe doesn't work anymore. Thank you to the anonymous reader who informed me about this. :]
Vox has closed down their site for good. It would have been a smart thing to save the recipe, but I didn't. I really wish I had. :[
I did a search and was able to find the recipe, but no instructions.
Here is the recipe to make Doumyouji cookies. Thank you to miszagent for blogging about the ingredients! Here's her link: http://miszagent.blogspot.com/2009/02/c-mission-doumyouji-cookie-recipe.html
Shortbread Cookies (the face):
2 cups (280 grams) of all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon (2 grams) of salt
2 sticks (226 grams) of unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup (60 grams) of powdered sugar
1 teaspoon (4 grams) of pure vanilla extract
Chocolate Cookies (the hair):
1 stick (113 grams) of unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup (110 grams) of brown sugar
1/4 cup (50 grams) of white sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon (4 grams) of pure vanilla extract
1 cup (140 grams) of all-purpose flour
1/4 cup (30 grams) of Dutch-processed cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/8 teaspoon of salt
Other supplies:
tooth picks, cookie dough roller, oval cookie cutter
Since I wasn't able to find instructions, I'm going to try and go off from what I remember. >.<
Shortbread cookie dough (the face):
In large mixer bowl, beat in the butter, powdered sugar, and salt until creamy. Add vanilla extract, then gradually beat in flour, blending thoroughly.
Now that you have the dough done, you will need to flatten the dough. Gather the dough in a ball and place it on top of plastic wrap. Place another plastic wrap on top of the dough. Flatten the dough until it's about ¼ inch thick. Wrap it up and place it in the freezer for about an hour. Make sure it's not rock hard when you take it out. You need to be able to push the cookie cutter through the dough.
Chocolate cookie dough (the hair):
This is similar to the shortbread cookie dough. In large mixer bowl, beat in the butter, white sugar, salt, baking soda, brown sugar, cocoa powder, and egg until creamy. Add vanilla extract, then gradually beat in flour, blending thoroughly.
Repeat the same process as above for flattening the dough and placing it in the freezer.
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Take out the shortbread cookie dough (the face) and start cutting out the faces with the oval cookie cutter. Bend the cookie cutter however you want it to get the right shape for the face. Get the chocolate cookie dough out and start molding the hair onto the short bread cookie dough.
As you're doing this, the dough may start to soften and start to get sticky, making it difficult to work with. Just place it back in the freezer until it hardens a little and able to work with it again.
Lightly grease the cookie sheet by spraying Pam cooking spray for baking onto the or unsalted butter). Place the cookie heads onto the sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Keep an eye on the cookies just in case.
Remove the cookies from the oven and start making the face. Use a toothpick in a dabbing motion. Let it cool and you are done!
I hope my instructions were clear and I hope that your cookies will turn out okay. I'm going off from what I remember, so there might be some mistakes and I apologize if there are any.
If anyone has any information, or saved the the instructions from Iroiro's Doumyouji cookie recipe from Vox, please let me know. I'm sure all of the readers would like to know. :]
Let me know if it turned out well for you. Also, it would be awesome if you shared pictures of how your cookies turned out. Good luck! :DLabels: Tasty Thursday
