Whenever I go into a store like Mitsuwa or the Trendy store inside Mitsuwa, I always see cute key/phone charms that I want to get, but they are a bit pricey for something so tiny. I went online, did a few searches, and I found out that tons of people make their own!
In order to do this you'll need Sculpey polymer clay that you can bake in the oven. When this clay is baked, it turns solid in the end. So now I can make as much key/phone charms as I want. :D
There are other polymer oven-bake clays out there, such as Fimo, but I prefer using Sculpey's, plus, they're a bit cheaper than the Fimo brand. I purchased a couple of the Sculpey III from Michaels and Jo-Ann's, but Michaels is cheaper compared to Jo-Ann's.
To make the Dragon Quest slime, you'll need a few materials.
Sculpey III Polymer clay (Oven-bake) in white, French blue, black, and red hot red
Thumb tack
A business card
Wire cutter
Pliers
Jewelry finding (the one with the loop) OR wire
Jump ring
Leather cord or any type of cord will do
Oven or toaster oven

I know the thumb tack and business card aren't typical tools you would use, but I didn't purchase any tools needed to make the clay, so these household items helped me get through it. The thumb tack was used to smooth out a few lines, add some clay to tiny holes and to flatten the clay. I used the business card to scrape off the clay from the surface and also to flatten the clay.
Just a reminder: When working with clay in different colors, it can mix with the other colors, so you will need to wash your hands.
Here is an image I put together to use as a guide.
Once you have gathered the materials, grab a piece of the French blue clay and roll it up into a ball. When you have that done, place it onto a smooth surface and pinch the top, and apply light pressure as you push it down. This will give it a curvature. You want to make it similar to a Hershey's kiss chocolate.
Now it's time for the eyes. You'll need to grab a tiny piece of the white clay and roll that up into a ball and flatten it. You'll need two pieces for the eyes. Place the white clay onto the body of the slime.
Grab a small piece of red clay and roll it up into a ball, place it onto a surface and roll it out as if it were a snake. Lightly flatten it and place that onto the body of the slime accordingly.
Get a tiny piece of black and repeat the same procedure as you did with the white clay. Put these two black pieces on top of the white clay.
You're almost done! Grab your finding or wire and adjust it by cutting of the end with a wire cutter. If you are using a wire, grab an end and create a loop. At the end of the wire, the one that's not the loop, slightly bend it. This will give it something to hold onto and it will not fall out easily.
Preheat your oven 275°F (130°C). Once it's finished preheating, place it onto a baking sheet or a piece of foil and bake it for 15 minutes. Remove it from the oven and let it cool. When it's cool, place a tiny drop of super glue where the finding was inserted to make sure it's secure and you're finished!
And here is my first batch of the Sculpey charms.
In the first image, I was testing out the clay and to my surprise, it turned out pretty good. I'm probably going to give this either to my boyfriend or his sister. This slime doesn't have a finding attached, so it can be displayed or used as a light paper weight. :3
Next I made the slime with a finding, the Mega Man energy tank, Mega Man's head, and a cute panda with a heart clip.
The last image are the charms I'll be giving to my boyfriend as a Valentine's day present. I hope he loves it as much as I loved making it! :3
The most difficult one to make, but my favorite, is Mega Man's head. I had trouble adding another color around head and it was hard to smooth it out afterward. Maybe if I had the proper tools, I wouldn't have had such a hard time. Nevertheless, it was exciting to see the finishing results.
Have fun making the slime, as well as other things with the clay~! Have a great Valentine's day.Labels: DIY, Valentine's Day
